Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) Compliance

Helping you control airborne hazards and meet your legal duties under COSHH.

What's the Objective?

Protecting workers from airborne hazards.

Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems are a vital engineering control to prevent or reduce exposure to hazardous substances in workplace air. The objective is to protect the health of employees from dust, fumes, vapours, and gases released during handling, processing, or production activities.

The need for an LEV system is typically identified after a COSHH risk assessment reveals airborne contaminants at unsafe levels. Where exposure cannot be eliminated, LEV systems should be installed and maintained in line with current regulations and HSE guidance.

Who Is Responsible?

The framework you operate within.

LEV systems must be installed and maintained in line with the following standards and guidance:

COSHH Regulations 2002

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health: the legal foundation for managing exposure.

HSG258

Controlling Airborne Contaminants at Work (supersedes HSG37 and HSG54).

14-Month Rule

Each LEV system must be examined at least once every 14 months by a competent person.

PPE as Last Resort

Engineering controls come first; PPE should only be used when other measures aren't practicable.

The Regulations

Key COSHH LEV duties.

Under COSHH, employers and employees both carry defined responsibilities for controlling exposure:

  1. Reg 7

    Control of Exposure

Employers must prevent or adequately control exposure to hazardous substances.

  2. Reg 8

    Use & Reporting

Employees must use the LEV provided and report any defects without delay.

  3. Reg 9

    Test & Maintain

LEV systems must be tested and maintained, with records kept for at least 5 years.

  4. 14 Months

    Mandatory Testing

Each LEV system must be examined at least once every 14 months by a competent person.

How We Help

End-to-end LEV compliance.

A connected programme of services that simplifies your legal responsibilities and keeps you audit-ready.

LEV System Surveys

Documentation of fans, motors, ducting, hoods, and fume cupboards.

Diagrammatic Test Sketches

Clear system diagrams identifying all test points for your records and HSE audits.

Expert Testing

Examinations carried out by trained engineers using the latest measurement technology.

Test Point Marking & Labelling

Every test point clearly labelled with a unique ID and next test due date, in support of Reg 8.

Regulation Compliance Documentation

Compliance documentation with test results, observations and reports.

Software-Driven Reminders

Our system notifies you one month before each LEV is due for re-testing.

Minimal Disruption

Testing is performed under normal operating conditions to reduce downtime.

Ongoing Compliance Support

Continuous oversight so your records and inspections always stay current.
